Project NoMBSI

The following Key has a form of a few, hierarchically arranged, detailed Keys (D-Keys) enriched with photos. It is designed to allow the determination of benthic invertebrates inhabiting freshwater environments in Central Europe, which:

• belong to the so-called “macrofauna” (with length greater than 2 mm),
• have commonly found in the samples taken in accordance with the NoMBSI methodology
• can be seen and identified on photographs made in accordance with the NoMBSI methodology

The Key does not include certain groups of animals:

• those which are not clearly visible on digital photos
• those which are typically poorly recognized from other similar taxa on digital photos
• being a very young larval stages

The Key allows to identify selected benthic taxa with precision necessary to calculate the value of the index xyz - mostly to the family level. The Key is based mainly on those morphological features which can be easily seen on pictures taken in accordance with the NoMBSI methodology. Only individuals which had been unequivocally correctly recognized should be taken into account in assessment of the environmental quality with the index xyz - the rest should be ignored. When the name of taxon is bolded in the text it means that identification is finished on that taxonomic level.
